The Problem of Lighting your work outside.

I painted the sketch on the right on location. It was a glorious clear, brilliant day and the the chroma looked an absolute knock -out. I thought I laid it in very boldly, but as I worked on it, I knew I was in trouble when I kept reaching for dull yellows for the leaves, instead of the highest chroma pastels that I possess. Indeed , it was dead as a smelt when I brought it home.

Photography flatters, so in the lower photo it looks passable. The doctored photo above, however, gives a better sense of what it looks like in room light.

Memory sketch

I did the memory sketch, above left, to see if I could capture the brilliance I had experienced. It is crude, but much more evocative of the light and the place. I have yet to figure out how to light my work on site so that it doesn’t look over the top in outdoor light, and dead in indoor light
